Chic, charm and cognac: inside the Hennessy home-turned-hotel, off the Champs-Elysées

Creating a ‘home away from home’ is the ultimate objective of any hotelier – be it within an economy or luxury setting.

When the property originated as a residence for the family of the most famous cognac brand globally, you could say they have a certain edge over their competitors.

La Clef Champs-Elysées Paris, a short stroll from the iconic tree-lined avenue in its name, was built in 1907 for the Hennessy family, owners of the world-famous cognac house.

Architects Félix Le Nevé and Albert d’Hont were commissioned by James Hennessy – son of the brand’s founder, Irish military officer and businessman, Richard Hennessy – who was awarded the finest Paris façade that year.

Today, well over a century later, elements of its Haussmannian-style architecture remain, from the stone façade to the original wrought-iron staircase snaking up its five storeys, reflecting the quintessential Parisian style of the 19th century.

The interior design was entrusted to Jean-Philippe Nuel, a leading international luxe interior design studio, known for its work on hotels.

“The primary aim of the design was to preserve authenticity and a Parisian spirit, evoking true French art de vivre,” says Residence Manager, Adrien Sardin.

“Dedicated to preserving architectural heritage, La Clef Champs-Elysées Paris showcases a perfect balance of old-world charm and contemporary touches in its design.”

In 2019, it became the third property under The Ascott Limited’s The Crest Collection, a fitting addition to a brand portfolio which promises ‘A Story Behind Every Door’.

Located on Rue de Bassano, the hotel offers a unique space with the comforts of a residence, alongside dedicated service and sensory experiences.

On arrival through its arched doorway, guests are welcomed to a luxurious lobby which is home to the hotel’s very own fragrance lounge.

Created by Jean Charles Sommerard, Founder and Master Perfumer of the Sevessence Paris perfume house, it is the first fragrance lounge to be developed in the luxury hotels sector.

“The fragrance lounge at La Clef Champs-Elysées Paris creates an olfactory experience that sets the tone for each welcome,” says Sardin.

“Designed as a centrepiece of the lobby, the fragrance lounge invites guests to embark on a journey of discovery in the world of scents.

“On display to evoke a sensory experience, is a catalogue of five essences and a signature fragrance that guests may enjoy as they gain insights into French couture perfumery and indulge in an essence of Paris.”

Each of the 70 rooms, suites and duplex apartments have been designed to reflect a traditional Parisian apartment, with fireplaces, herringbone parquet flooring and bookcases – blending contemporary touches with nods to the past.

While there’s no shortage of Parisian landmarks on its doorstep, a quiet little nook on the fourth floor provides a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower, drawing excited tourists and even romantics for the occasional proposal.

Renowned French brands are celebrated throughout, from L’Occitane bathroom amenities to Lancome’s Café de la Rose handcrafted pastries, while the comforts and practicalities of home can be seen in the fully-equipped kitchen, Nespresso machine, dishwasher and washer-dryer.

Guests can also avail of a 24-hour concierge and room service, valet-parking, laundry, and enjoy a buffet breakfast, fitness suite and residents’ lounge.

The hotel is also home to the first restaurant in France by Michelin-starred Singaporean Chinese cuisine group Imperial Treasure, and a ground-floor bar, where cognac and champagne flows.
