Delta Air Lines has used this week’s Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom to announce an order for over 100 Boeing 737-10 and an additional 12 Airbus A220-300 aircraft as the carrier continues its massive fleet modernisation strategy.

The Atlanta-based carrier’s Boeing order includes options for 30 more Boeing 737-10 aircraft, which is the largest model in the MAX family, and deliveries will start from 2025.

Delta Air Lines Chief Executive Officer, Ed Bastian, said the aircraft will be 20%-30% more fuel efficient than the retiring Delta planes it will replace, making the agreement an important step in Delta’s journey toward a sustainable future for aviation.

“The Boeing 737-10 will be an important addition to Delta’s fleet as we shape a more sustainable future for air travel, with an elevated customer experience, improved fuel efficiency and best-in-class performance,” he said.

“These new aircraft provide superior operating economics and network flexibility, and the agreement reflects our prudent approach to deploying our capital.

“This aircraft will be piloted, served and maintained by the very best professionals in the business, and it’s their hard work and dedication to our customers that always sets us apart.”

Delta Air Lines will also continue to grow its fuel-efficient, state-of-the-art Airbus A220 fleet, exercising rights to purchase 12 new A220-300 aircraft.

“The A220-300 is economical, efficient and delivers superior performance,” said Delta Air Lines S.V.P. – Fleet & TechOps Supply Chain, Mahendra Nair.

“These additional aircraft in the A220 family are an excellent investment for our customers and employees and will be fundamental as we work toward a more sustainable future for air travel.”

Quiet and comfortable, the amenity-rich 130-seat narrow-body offers customers the in-flight experience of a widebody aircraft. Featuring 12 First Class, 30 Comfort+ and 88 Main Cabin seats, our A220-300 aircraft will serve customers traveling domestically and to our coastal hubs.

Delta took delivery of its first Airbus A220 in October 2018 and was the first U.S. carrier to operate the aircraft type.

Delta currently has 11 A220-300s in service and 51 on order, including the 12 purchase rights exercised this week, which are slated for delivery beginning in 2026. In addition, Delta currently operates a fleet of 45 109-seat A220-100 aircraft.
