Wayfarer review: The Hari is a standout in the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong’s Wan Chai

by James Wilkinson

Hong Kong is home to many leading luxury, lifestyle and boutique hotels right across the popular city and in the heart of Wan Chai, The Hari stands-out for its style and hospitality as James Wilkinson discovers.

For many years, Wan Chai has been one of Hong Kong’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, with neon signs and interior design stores home alongside pubs, restaurants, discotheques and Michelin-stared local restaurants.

In the heart of it on Lockhart Road is The Hari, a boutique hotel that’s the brainchild of Dr Aron Harilela, the Chairman and CEO of Harilela Hotels, who helped create a stylish and relaxed stay in firmly busting neighbourhood.

The elegant 30-storey hotel features 210 guest rooms including three signature rooftop suites that are firmly a standout in this part of Wan Chai that’s on the edge of Causeway Bay.

The Hari’s interior design comes courtesy of Tara Bernerd, the Founder and CEO of Tara Bernerd and Partners, a leading international interior architecture and design practice based in London, and she’s firmly helped create a hotel that raises the bar on many boutique levels.

When it comes to the rooms, you can expect a stylish open plan design that includes marble bathrooms with a walk-in rainforest shower, 49-inch 4K ultra-HD flat screen TV, Nespresso coffee machine and Mühldorfer’s bedding and luxury linen.

The beds are comfortable, you’ll enjoy the urban views of Wan Chai and the property also offers personalised minibar packages.

A must-do in this property is booking a table on the terrace at Japanese restaurant Zoku, where you’ll find ceiling of angled timber slats in origami-like forms, pink shades and velve alongside delectable dishes, signature cocktails crafted with Japanese ingredients, an excellent sake collection and wines.

Zoku employs seasonal Japanese produce to reimagine classics, ranging from temaki and robata to heartier mains.

This is also a fantastic spot for brunch every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays from 12 noon to 3 pm.

To kick off the brunch feast, enjoy a Moriwase Sashimi Platter, Wagyu Gyoza and Zoku Nigiris, while for mains, expect dishes such as Toriniku Teryaki (Grilled spring chicken), Hamachi Kama (Yellowtail collar, sweet potato espuma), and Kohitsuji Yaki (Chargrilled lamb chop).

You can also opt for the Lobster Tsukemen (Okinawa Soba, Spicy Soup) or Grilled A5 Miyazaki Wagyu (Kobocha, yellow chili sauce), while there are desserts such as Salted Caramel Sando, Hojicha Creme Brulee and a Strawberry Pistachio Tart.

Alongside Zoku, the hotel is also home to Lucciola Restaurant and Bar and The Lounge off the lobby for coffee, tea, light lunches and cocktails.

While The Hari might not be on the water like many of Hong Kong’s best hotels, it certainly stands out for its style, comfort, food and cocktails and fantastic hospitality in a fun part of the city.
