Wayfarer exclusive: inside the Regent Taipei, one of Taiwan’s finest hotels

by James Wilkinson

For decades, the Regent Taipei has been one of the leading luxury hotels in Taiwan, thanks to its location, spacious rooms, fantastic club lounge and excellent restaurants on offer. To find out what makes the property so unique, James Wilkinson caught up with the Regent Taipei General Manager, Simon Wu.

Simon, the Regent Taipei is popular on so many levels, from the location to the club lounge, design, rooms and food and beverage on offer. Tell us about your favourite things of the property.

What I love most about Regent Taipei is the way everything comes together seamlessly.

The location places our guests in the very heart of Taipei’s cultural, dining, shopping, and luxury retail districts, with Regent Galleria offering a unique extension of the hotel experience through one of Taiwan’s most distinguished luxury shopping destinations.

Within the hotel, there is a sense of calm, space, and quiet luxury. The Tai Pan Club Lounge represents the essence of Regent hospitality -personalised butler service, privacy, and a refined atmosphere that feels more like a private residence than a hotel.

Combined with our spacious rooms, thoughtful design, eight distinctive dining venues, the award-winning Wellspring Spa, and the presence of Regent Galleria, Regent Taipei offers a balance of vibrancy and serenity that is truly special.

Tell us about the stylish rooms and suites on offer.

Our rooms and suites are designed to offer a sense of space, comfort, and understated elegance.

They are among the most spacious in Taipei, with a design philosophy that blends modern luxury with timeless warmth.

Natural light, refined materials, and thoughtful details create a calming environment for both business and leisure travellers.

For our Tai Pan floor guests, the experience is elevated further through 24-hour butler service and highly personalized care, ensuring every stay feels effortless and tailored.

Tell us about the fantastic food and beverage on offer, which is some of the best in Taipei.

Food and beverage is at the heart of Regent Taipei’s identity. From Japanese cuisine at Mihan (B3) and immersive teppanyaki and steakhouse dining at Robin’s, to refined fine dining experiences at the award-winning, internationally recognised Silks House, and beloved comfort classics such as the CNN-awarded beef noodles at azie, our diverse culinary portfolio reflects both depth and breadth—offering everything from elevated gastronomy to heartfelt comfort food, and making Regent Taipei one of the city’s most respected dining destinations.

Tell us about the recent upgrade of the Tai Pan Lounge and Tai Pan guest rooms.

We have recently completed a comprehensive refurbishment of our Tai Pan Lounge and Tai Pan guest rooms, elevating both the design language and guest experience in these key signature spaces.

At this stage, there are no immediate large-scale refurnishing projects planned. Our focus is on continuous enhancement rather than constant transformation—refining service excellence, guest experience, sustainability practices, and operational quality across the property.

Looking ahead, our development strategy is centred on thoughtful evolution, ensuring Regent Taipei continues to meet the expectations of modern luxury travellers while remaining true to its heritage and identity.

Simon, what’s your x-factor at the Regent Taipei?

Our x-factor lies in its ability to offer a complete, integrated destination experience within one iconic location.

At the heart of this is the two-level Regent Galleria—the first and largest luxury shopping mall located within a hotel in Taiwan—hosting more than 50 of the world’s most prestigious boutiques and delivering an exclusive lifestyle experience for discerning travellers.

Within Regent Taipei, guests can truly enjoy everything in one place: world-class dining including Michelin-starred and fine dining restaurants, award-winning wellness at the Wellspring Spa, refined hospitality, and luxury retail, creating a seamless, immersive environment where living, dining, wellness, and shopping come together effortlessly.

Beyond facilities and services, Regent Taipei creates a true sense of belonging. Many guests return not only because of comfort or quality, but because of relationships, trust, and familiarity.

How important is the loyalty, particularly given the global popularity of IHG Rewards?

Loyalty today is no longer transactional—it is emotional and experiential. IHG Rewards provides a powerful global platform, but our role is to translate that into meaningful local experiences.

At Regent Taipei, loyalty is built through consistency, recognition, and personalised service. Equally important, our returning guests become our most valuable partners in growth.

Through their continued stays, we receive their insights, comments, and feedback, which allow us to refine our services, enhance our experiences, and continuously improve the quality of our accommodations.

When guests feel seen, understood, and valued—and when they see their voices reflected in our evolution—loyalty becomes natural rather than incentivised.

What are some of your favourite things to do in the local area?

I love the balance of old and new around Regent Taipei—from traditional markets and temples to modern galleries, cafés, and boutiques.

Walking through Zhongshan District, internationally recognised as one of the world’s’ coolest neighbourhoods, offers a true sense of Taipei’s character: vibrant, creative, and authentic.

Just beyond, historic Dadaocheng—one of the city’s oldest and most photogenic districts—reveals another layer of Taipei’s soul, from bustling Chinese medicine shops and traditional fabric and dried-goods markets to new urban boutiques and eateries featuring local produce.
