Singapore Airlines ups the Sydney ante with the return of A380 flights from December

by James Wilkinson

Singapore Airlines is dramatically increasing its Sydney capacity as Australia’s quarantine restrictions ease, bringing the A380 back to New South Wales and operating 17 flights per week each way between the major cities from December 1.

The move from Singapore Airlines will help thousands of Australians return home, which has been a commitment from the carrier since the start of the pandemic.

In fact, since April 2020, Singapore Airlines has operated almost 4,000 passenger flights to Australia, helping repatriate some 74,000 people in the process.

The carrier has also run an additional 57 charter services since June last year helping around 13,000 people either return to Australia or travel safely back to their homes around the globe.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President, Louis Arul, said the return of the A380 to Sydney underlines the airline’s continued “unwavering commitment to the Australian market”.

“Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the highly challenging and financially constrained operating environment, Singapore Airlines invested heavily to ensure Australia remained connected to the world,” Arul said.

“With the New South Wales and Australian border opening up from 1 November, the A380 will support even more Australians hoping to reconnect with loved ones ahead of the Christmas period.”

Fitted with 471 seats, Singapore Airlines’ A380s include six Suites, 78 Business Class, 44 Premium Economy Class and 343 Economy Class seats and customers can expect the airline’s world-class products and service.

Arul said customers can also travel in confidence with the industry-leading health and safety measures that Singapore has put in place for their well-being.

“Today’s announcement is another exciting step on the road to recovery,” he said. “As we continue to support all levels of government in planning for Australia’s reopening in a safe, sustainable and scalable way, we will remain nimble in deploying capacity to markets as demand warrants.”

He said Singapore Airlines’ in-flight health and safety measures include extensive cabin cleaning, the provision of personal care kits for each customer, and myriad digital solutions to support a seamless travel experience.

Additionally, all Singapore Airlines aircraft are equipped with advanced, HEPA filtration systems that replace all cabin air every three minutes, providing a safer in-flight environment.
