Wayfarer exclusive: the best of the Lion City from the Singapore EDITION concierge team

by James Wilkinson

Since late-2023, The Singapore EDITION has been one of Asia’s coolest luxury hotels and it also provides the ideal base for exploring this city that’s full of adventures. To find out some experiences not to be missed, Wayfarer’s James Wilkinson spoke to The Singapore EDITION’s concierge team.

What are your favourite recommendations for activities and experiences on property at The Singapore EDITION?

For something a little special in the afternoon, I would highly recommend our Afternoon Tea, available Wednesday to Sunday from 1pm-5pm.

Rather than the traditional three-tiered tray, each item is presented as an individual small plate with beautifully crafted bites, both savoury and sweet. The menu changes quarterly, so there is always something new to discover.

For those seeking a moment of restoration, The Spa is well worth a visit. We offer a full range of body treatments, massages and facials, alongside a thermal suite complete with sauna, steam room, ice fountain, vitality pool and a relaxation lounge, a wonderful place to decompress before resuming your day.

And if you only have time for one more discovery, make it The ROOF. Perched on the top floor with views of our 43-metre pool and the Orchard Road skyline, the evenings offer a gentle breeze, the sun setting over the city and a downtempo soundtrack that makes it very easy to linger.

Our slushy cocktails are perfectly suited to Singapore’s heat. A quiet gem, though not one that tends to stay secret for long.

Tell us about some of your favourite experiences and tours in Singapore.

For something truly off the beaten path, I always recommend Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last remaining traditional village in Singapore and one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

The houses are built from wood with zinc rooftops, and chickens and roosters roam freely between them. It is a world apart from the Orchard Road bustle just a short drive away, and a reminder of how much this city has transformed within a single lifetime.

What are some of the unique cultural experiences the team can organise in the local area?

There is quite a range we are happy to curate depending on what guests are looking for.

For something hands-on, a Peranakan cooking class in the Katong area is always a highlight; learning to prepare dishes like laksa or nyonya kueh from families who have been cooking them for generations is a genuinely memorable experience.

We can also arrange a guided heritage walk through Chinatown or Little India, which tells the story of Singapore’s immigrant communities in a way that no museum quite can.

For those drawn to the arts, a visit to one of the galleries along Gillman Barracks, Singapore’s dedicated art cluster, offers a quieter, more considered way to engage with the contemporary Southeast Asian art scene.

We are also well-placed to organize a few cultural events during Singapore Art Week in January every year.

For something a little more unexpected, a morning visit to Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last traditional village in Singapore, is unlike anything else the city offers. Followed by a local breakfast of kaya toast and kopi (local way of saying black coffee) at one of the old coffee houses nearby.

We tailor everything to our guests interests and pace and can put together something that feels personal.

Singapore is well known for its culinary scene… do you have any favourite cafes, restaurants or bars in the local area that are a must-do?

Singapore’s dining scene moves quickly. There is always something new worth seeking out. That said, one of my personal favourites is the Joo Chiat and Katong neighbourhood, which has a wonderful character all of its own.

For tapas, Next Door Spanish Café does it beautifully, authentic, unpretentious and very good.

In the Maxwell neighbourhood, Cultivate Café is a lovely spot for a leisurely meal in what feels like a converted old library. Warm, full of books and the kind of place you end up staying longer than planned.
