Wayfarer exclusive: Unpacking the Alva Hotel Brisbane debut with General Manager Daniel Gerritse

by Daisy Melwani

IHG Hotels and Resorts has debuted The Alva Hotel Brisbane, joining its luxury and lifestyle Vignette Collection of independent, one-of-a-kind properties. General Manager Daniel Gerritse exclusively chats to Wayfarer about the hotel’s evolution.

Formerly Hotel X, The Alva Hotel Brisbane has undergone a reimagining of the guest experience through “design, music and a deep sense of place, while offering guests the assurance of a globally recognised hospitality brand”.

Tell us about the evolution of Hotel X into The Alva Hotel Brisbane.

This is a really exciting new chapter for the hotel. Hotel X built a strong reputation, but The Alva Hotel gives us the opportunity to share a much richer story about Brisbane and Fortitude Valley.

We’ve created a hotel that’s more connected to its neighbourhood, where guests don’t just stay the night; they’re encouraged to experience the local culture, entertainment, dining and creativity that make this part of Brisbane so memorable.

Being an IHG Vignette Collection hotel means we can offer that connection to unique local experiences with the backing of a world-leading hotel brand.

Give us some examples of how the rebrand is ‘more than just a new name’.

You’ll notice the difference from the moment you walk through the door.

We’ve transformed our arrival experience, elevated our rooftop pool area, introduced new locally inspired artworks, and created opportunities for our guests to discover Brisbane beyond the hotel.

Whether it’s our The Sounds of Alva music programme, curated neighbourhood guides or our Post a Moment, Post a Memory ritual, every touchpoint has been designed to create a stronger connection between our guests and the city. It’s about embodying a real sense of place, not just a place to stay.

What can guests expect to be different from being part of IHG’s Vignette Collection?

What I love about Vignette Collection is the celebration of individuality. Every hotel within the collection has its own identity, and for us, that’s all about Brisbane.

Our guests still enjoy all the benefits of staying with IHG, including IHG One Rewards and the confidence that comes with a world-leading brand, but the experience itself is more connected to our surrounds.

Everything from our design and music to our recommendations and guest experiences has been shaped by the city we’re proud to call home.

Tell us about your food and beverage offerings at the hotel.

Elevated food and drink are a big part of The Alva Hotel experience. We’re fortunate to be home to two standout venues in Bisou Bisou and Iris Rooftop, which have both become favourites with locals and visitors.

Whether you’re joining us for breakfast, a long lunch or sunset dinner and drinks overlooking the city, our vision is for the hotel to feel like a destination in its own right, and a launchpad for those who aspire to a deeper connection with Brisbane.

How are you expecting to grow your corporate and meetings business.

We’ve seen a change in what business travellers truly value in hotels beyond the traditional corporate stay, and that’s exactly where The Alva Hotel fits. From offering light-filled spaces outside of guest rooms to work and connect, to blending business travel with opportunities to immerse themselves in local culture, we are expecting our guests to enjoy a renewed energy when they stay with us.

We’re close to the CBD, but we’re also in the heart of Fortitude Valley, surrounded by great dining, fashion, art, entertainment and culture. That combination is appealing for corporate travellers and event organisers.
