Wayfarer review: Genesis makes stunning SUV debut with luxurious GV80

by James Wilkinson

It has been firmly a case of worth-the-wait from Genesis, with the South Korean automaker making a huge splash in Australia with the launch of its first ever SUV, the GV80.

Combining luxury, style, comfort and performance, the GV80 (from AU$90,600), is a fantastic addition to a range that already includes the G70 sports sedan and G80 luxury sedan.

Genesis has debuted the GV80 in four variants, which feature three powertrains, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, five or seven seats offerings and an optional luxury package.

Opening the range on the power front is the GV80 2.5T, which has a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine that delivers 224kW of power and 422Nm of torque.

The range is then topped out with the GV80 3.5T AWD, which ramps things up thanks to the 3.5-litre turbo petrol V6 engine that produces 279kW and 530Nm respectively.

While the power certainly impresses, where the Genesis hits the mark is on the standard appointments from the first model in the range. Expect a mood-lit cabin with leather and real wood-finished trim, a 14.5-inch HD touchscreen multimedia interface, panoramic sunroof, 20-inch alloy wheels and a power-operated tailgate.

Right across the GV80, you’ll find more features that also impress, like the interior lighting control system, the ease of plugging in to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the 21-speaker Lexicon sound system, power rear seats and the sunshades in the back.

Importantly, on the safety front, find 10 airbags and the Genesis Active Safety Control suite of technologies headlined by the Smart Cruise Control system.

It’s an incredibly impressive SUV debut from Genesis and you’ll find a ton of value for money across the board.
