The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, located in Baa Atoll, the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site in the Maldives, has completed a new solar energy project.

This initiative will significantly reduce energy consumption and minimise the resort’s environmental impact.

Blessed with a year-round tropical climate, the resort has harnessed this natural advantage through the installation of a new solar panel system.

This solar project will cut the resort’s diesel consumption by 135,000 liters annually, leading to a reduction of 361,800 kg in carbon emissions—equivalent to the benefit of planting 16,400 trees.

Nestled discreetly in the heart of the island, the 650 new solar panels generate approximately six hours of energy daily.

By adopting this renewable energy source, the resort expects to save over USD$135,000 each year.

The solar project underscores the property’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, according to The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s General Manager, Vijay Kumar.

“As an island resort, sustainability is key, and we are committed to creating solutions to minimise the impact we have on this beautiful eco-system,” he said.

“The new panels will serve to harness the sunshine we are blessed with in the Maldives and reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel.”

He said a recent study highlighting that diesel consumption represents 80% of total emissions in the Maldives reinforces the importance of such initiatives.

In addition to the solar project, the resort has implemented several other eco-friendly practices, including a food composting machine that recycles food waste into garden fertilizer, and an innovative bottle crusher that transforms broken bottles and glasses into umbrella bases for the villas.
