The popular Castaway Island, Fiji, has marked a milestone six decades as one of the country’s longest continuously operating beachfront resorts.

Official 60th anniversary celebrations will take place from 22-28 November under a 1960s vintage theme, culminating in a Cocktail Gala event on 27 November, which is expected to draw government dignitaries, returning guests, and community partners.

The popular resort opened on 6 July 1966 on Qalito Island while Fiji’s tourism industry was still in its infancy. The property was carved from the island’s foliage and opened with just four bures for fishermen to stay overnight.

Following the arrival of new owner Geoffrey Shaw in 1992, the resort was transformed into an icon in Fiji’s tourism industry, becoming synonymous with authentic, barefoot island hospitality.

Today, under Outrigger Resorts and Hotels, Castaway Island, Fiji, has embraced the island’s ecosystem as inseparable from the guest experience, and in 2025, the resort became the second property in Fiji to earn Green Key Certification.

As part of the planned celebrations, the resort is inviting generations of loyal guests to participate in a guest- and host-driven storytelling campaign that will run for the remainder of the year.
