Asia boost: United Airlines goes double daily from Hong Kong to San Francisco

by James Wilkinson

On the back of solid demand, United Airlines is boosting the frequency of its current daily Hong Kong (HKG) to San Francisco (SFO) service to 12 flights weekly on August 3, 2023, before expanding the service further to 14 flights weekly, a twice-daily service, in late October 2023.

United Airlines’ Regional Director of Greater China, Korea, and Southeast Asia Sales, Walter Dias, said the newly expanded service will provide travellers in Hong Kong, the southern part of mainland China, and some Southeast Asian countries, with more flight schedules to San Francisco as well as additional connecting options to more destinations in the mainland U.S., Canada, and Latin America via its hub in San Francisco.

“United returned to the Hong Kong market just two months ago after a pause of nearly three years, and we are excited to announce that we will be adding more flights between Hong Kong and San Francisco this August,” he said.

“Combined with the new late-evening Hong Kong departure time and early-afternoon San Francisco departure time, our new 12 times-weekly HKG-SFO service will provide our customers in Hong Kong, the southern part of mainland China, and some Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, with more flight options to San Francisco and one-stop connections to more than 70 destinations in the mainland U.S., Canada, and Latin America via our hub in San Francisco.”

The new flight UA878 will leave HKG every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 10:30 p.m. and will arrive in SFO at 8:25 p.m. the same day.

The return flight, UA869, will depart SFO every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and will arrive in HKG at 6:45 p.m. the following day.

All flights will utilize the B777-300ER widebody aircraft that offers 60 seats in the United Polaris business cabin, 24 seats in the United Premium Plus cabin, and 266 seats in the United Economy cabin.

San Francisco is United’s largest hub on the U.S. West Coast and a gateway to Asia-Pacific. United operates more than 200 daily departures from San Francisco International Airport, taking customers to more than 100 destinations around the globe, including the most international service with flights to 26 different international cities.

The hub currently offers direct flights to more than 10 Asia-Pacific destinations including Auckland, Brisbane, Haneda/Tokyo, Incheon/Seoul, Melbourne, Narita/Tokyo, Papeete, Singapore, Shanghai, Sydney, and Taipei.
